CGE Mural Installation: The Dancers
In August 2023 the Center for Global Engagement installed "the Dancers", a mural created by the talented CLU-Alumna Anna Bello. Anna's design was selected from a competitive pool and completed as part of her senior capstone project, under the direction of Professor Barbara Obermeier.
CGE sought a design to capture our vision of “Embracing Global Perspectives.” Anna described her concept around unity through the shared global connection of dance. Our hope is that community members and visitors to Cal Lutheran gain an understanding of our commitment to intercultural connections and motivation to learn more about different cultures through the visual inspiration. |

Faculty-Led Program Spotlight: A new Model, Ancient Philosophy in Greece (Spring Break 2023) |
This past April Prof. Brian Collins led fifteen Cal Lutheran students to Athens as part of his Ancient Philosophy in Greece course. “Taking the students on this travel seminar was amazing,” Prof. Collins said. “I already knew how special study abroad experiences are from my own travels during undergrad, but leading this class made me fall in love with the travel seminar model.”
Faculty are welcome to propose courses with study tour components—domestically and abroad—through the Office of Education Abroad. Models include spring or fall courses tied to May, Summer, January, or Spring Break away experiences, or stand-alone away program offerings. An exciting element of the Greece program is that it is the first embedded spring break offering provided at Cal Lutheran. Collins noted, “Having the travel component of the course be over spring break allowed for the students and me to have time together after the trip which allowed for more explicit connections to be made between the previous material and the experiences from traveling in Greece.”
The Office of Education Abroad will host a panel discussion on faculty-led programs during International Education Week, tentatively slated for Monday, November 13. Faculty-Led Program proposals are due Thursday, February 1, 2024, for courses with away program components in 2025. Please contact the OEA Director, Dr. Matthew Yates, at matthewyates@callutheran.edu with any questions.
