Don't Let your I-20 Expire: Check your Program End Date

Grab your I-20 and checkout your "program end date", does it reflect the reality? If not, don't allow it to expire if you need more time. After reviewing your academic plan with your academic advisor, if you will not complete your academic program by that date, then you will need an extension. If it is your case, follow these steps:

  • Request an I-20 Extension on your OISS Student Portal
  • Upload financial documentation that shows your ability to pay for tuition and living expenses for the extended time. Your financial proof cannot be more than 6 months old.

We will not be able to extend your I-20 once your I-20 current end date has passed. Please plan accordingly and consider our 10 business days of processing time in your planning!

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Workshop Video

An internship as an international student is called Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Before beginning any internship, you must have official authorization from immigration. You may do an internship (CPT) only if:

  • The internship is an integral part of your degree plan (e.g., required course for major or degree completion requirement)

  • You meet the CPT eligibility requirements available at the CPT FAQs document

  • You have completed the Cooperative Education Agreement from the Career Center
Introduction to Curricular Practical Training

IMPORTANT: Do not begin employment without authorization! The authorization is complete when you have a new I-20 in your hand. The new I-20 will show the authorization for CPT on page 2 and will show the approved dates.
