Reduced Course Load (RCL) Reminder

F-1 students are generally required to maintain full-time enrollment of at least 6 credits for graduate students and 12 credits for undergraduate students each semester.

However, in some cases, particularly during a student's final semester, the remaining degree requirements may total fewer than the full-time credits required.

If you will be enrolled in fewer than 6 (Graduate Student) or fewer than 12 (Undergraduate Student) credits for any semester, you must submit a Reduced Course Load (RCL) request through the OISS student portal and receive approval from International Student Services before the semester begins.

If you have questions about your eligibility for an RCL, please contact the OISS.

DO YOU NEED MORE TIME TO COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE?

In light of potential regulatory changes that may eliminate D/S (Duration of Status) for international students and scholars, we encourage students to plan ahead.

If your I-20 will expire during the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 semester and you need additional time to complete your degree, please submit your Program Extension Request through your OISS portal as soon as possible (ideally in June or July).

This will allow sufficient time for OISS to process your extension before any potential regulatory changes take effect.

If you have not recently reviewed your academic plan, we encourage you to contact your academic advisor to determine whether you may need additional semesters to complete your degree.
