| CGE Celebrates Five Year Anniversary |
Established in 2018, the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) recently completed its five-year anniversary. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with the CGE staff team and our campus collaborators to establish a centralized hub for our community's internationalization efforts. Some highlights of the past few years include: establishing a strategic plan, building off of the campus-wide ACE Internationalization Laboratory Project; creating the Global Leaders Community living-learning program; developing the CGE Educational Outreach team; expanding the away program portfolio from eight to over 50 opportunities; receiving approval by the U.S. Department of State for Cal Lutheran to host visiting scholars (J-1 program); and more!
For Fall 2023 CGE is launching a monthly newsletter projected for publication around the first Monday of each month to keep everyone updated on campus initiatives to expand global perspectives. You are invited to share your ideas for collaboration and/or announcements of international initiatives with us at global@callutheran.edu. Thanks for your partnership! ~ Dr. Christina Sanchez, Assoc. Provost for Global Engagement |

| Away Program Expanded Portfolio |
CGE’s Office of Education Abroad (OEA) expanded its portfolio of offerings by 66% to provide new semester program opportunities for students. Away programs include options to study, intern, serve, and/or research around the world. In addition to the Lutheran College Washington Semester program in D.C., Cal Lutheran now has an additional domestic offering in Puerto Rico! We encourage faculty to promote away programs to help our student in their global leadership development. The full campus community is invited to join our international education providers and OEA team at the Education Abroad Fair (see below for details).

CalLu Faculty-Led Overseas Offerings |
There are 11 proposals in motion for faculty-lead programs in 2023-2024, representing a record number of offerings provided by Cal Lutheran faculty. Last year our faculty implemented six successful programs, including three undergraduate programs to Italy (Film Production, Dr. Salimi), Greece (Philosophy, Dr. Collins), and England (Oxford/Honors Program, Dr. Carlson) and three graduate programs to Germany (Education, Dr. Rodriguez-Kiino), as well as Ecuador and Washington, DC. (both with SOM MPPA, Dr. Kahn). Most faculty-led programs are linked with a semester of study followed by overseas travel (2~4 weeks). A historic moment occurred in Spring ’23 when Dr. Brian Collins implemented the first embedded spring-break travel program, allowing for pre- and post-travel engagement with students. A workshop for away program proposals is coming later in Fall 2023. [Pictured below: Collins' Greece Program & Salimi's Italy Program]

Peer Mentors Help Welcome International Students
One-hundred and five new international students arrived for orientation, including 39 undergraduate and 66 graduate students from 42 different countries. The Office of International Admission and the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) provided an extended orientation with support from 33 international peer mentors (PM). Our PM team serve as “buddies” over the summer to offer guidance to the incoming students; their support continues through orientation and beyond in assisting students with orientation and welcoming them to the university. The PM team is a volunteer group of students led this year by OISS Assistant Director Lara Raynaud and CGE Student Assistant Avya Pandhi.
